About John
John MacKay is an arranger, conductor, educator, and euphoniumist currently studying at Duquesne. He has held conducting posts with the Carnegie Mellon Pre-College Trumpet Ensemble as Student Substitue Conductor, and has served as a student conductor for the Peters Township High School Wind Symphony and Concert Band.
John also created the posts of Assistant Wind Ensemble Conductor and Assistant Orchestra Conductor for the Carnegie Mellon Pre-College Wind Ensemble and Orchestra.
John is also a Euphoniumist, chairing Principal at several Pennsylvania Music Educator's Association (PMEA) Honors Festivals, including the All State Wind Ensemble in 2011. He has held the post of Principal Solo Euphonium with the River City Youth Brass Band (RCYBB), and has written for the ensemble before.
He has studied Euphonium with George Palton, Ross Cohen, and Barry Kilpatrick as well as conducting with Milt Barney, Robert Cameron, Walter Morales, Robert Dell and Drew Fennell. John plans to pursue a Masters in Wind Conducting upon the completion of his Bachelor of Music Education. John has also attended several conducting Symposiums with renowned artists such as Loras Schissel and H. Robert Reynolds. John also has held copying jobs for area composers such as Michael Moricz and Drew Fennell
John also has displayed proficiency at a high level on trumpet, flugelhorn, french horn, trombone and tuba, as well as basic proficiency in string bass.
John performs on a Yamaha YEP-842S Euphonium, and a Legacy FH750 Flugelhorn. In addition, he arranges with Sibelius 7 exclusively and conducts with a 15" GL Custom Batons Baton.
